MAC Matte Royal Lipstick Review

MAC Matte Royal Lipstick

Now here’s a lipstick you don’t see everyday! MAC is all about setting trends so when I spotted Matte Royal in the new Matte Lip Collection I knew it would be a hit. Sure, most folks are still warming up to blue lipsticks but some of us have been dying to see a blue lipstick from MAC.

And boy did they deliver with Matte Royal! I have a serious thing for this cool royal blue lipstick with just a hint of purple and MAC’s classic vanilla scent. As Katherine and I were saying, the hint of purple makes Matte Royal much more wearable than you’d originally think. On my lips, it doesn’t appear as a straight up blue but more of a fun “blurple”.

I know you’re probably thinking, “How the hell do I pull off blurple lips?” Easy! Okay, not all that easy. But it’s definitely a mind over matter kinda thing. Since it’s such a unique, funky shade I think it’s best to skip the “no makeup” approach with Matte Royal and go for a more glammed up look to complement the bold statement it makes. It’s sort of like buying an expensive, fancy gown and throwing on some cheap shoes with it. You have to get a little creative and pull it all together for it to work.

Usually, non-traditional lipstick colors are a bit of pain to work with but Matte Royal is quite enjoyable. It applied easily with a smooth, creamy lightweight texture, intense pigmentation and soft matte finish. There’s some slight patchiness once you get to the center of your bottom lip (due to the moistness) but otherwise Matte Royal applies mostly evenly.

Matte Royal wears quite well too. Although it’s a bold color, it doesn’t emphasize flakes, settle into lip lines, bleed or feather. And thanks to MAC’s new creamy matte formula this baby isn’t drying either. Matte Royal wears comfortably for around 6-7 hours before beginning to fade into a stain.

Naturally, everyone won’t be rushing to the counters to get their hands on MAC Matte Royal. However, if you have the balls to wear it then you need to be knocking over SA’s to get your hands on it the next time you hit the counter. Or you could just calmly order it online since it’s now permanent. 🙂

It’s great to hear that Matte Royal performs so well!! Especially important for a blupurple lipstick, would be a disaster if it was patchy, bled, or feathered. Next time I’m at a MAC counter, I’m going to swatch this shade to see if I can pull it off. I look good in blue and purple shadows, so maybe a blupurple lippie will work, too!

    1. Have you tried it yet?? I think Matte Royal would look beautiful on you!

It looks more purple. I’m still waiting for them to come out with a true Mediterranean blue :/ It looks good on you. Thank you for sharing.

    1. No problem! Matte Royal looks a lot more blue in person so I think you may still like it. It’s not exactly the kind of blue you’re looking for but I’m sure you’d be able to pull it off nicely. You have to give it a try!
