There’s nothing like waking up to a box of liquid lipsticks! Recently, Influenster sent over a couple of the new Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors for me to test out for you guys and I couldn’t be happier to tell you all about them. It was only a matter of time before Maybelline hopped in the liquid lipstick arena after the trend took the makeup world by storm. While it took a little time, Maybelline finally whipped up their own liquid matte lipstick formula with the new Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors. The Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color line features 10 shades ranging from nude to vampy for just $8 a pop. Do they live up to the matte liquid lipsticks we know and love?
Not exactly. The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors aren’t bad. They’re just totally different from the traditional matte liquid lipsticks I’ve grown to love. When I think of a matte liquid lipstick, I think of a budge-proof lipstick that lasts all day without much transfer or movement while I eat and drink. The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors aren’t like that though. The Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color formula is a bit thicker with a whipped, mousse-like texture that applies smoothly and evenly with full coverage in a single swipe. Sort of like a traditional matte liquid lipstick. However, the formula feels more like a gloss. The Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors never fully dry down and there’s a slight sheen upon application that lasts for at least an hour. Eventually, the Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors will “set” to a soft demi-matte finish but it still manages to transfer and slide around a bit through a meal.
Is the formula a complete let down? Not at all! The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors still come with some advantages. Like the fact that the formula is very comfortable to wear and much easier to apply than your average matte liquid lipstick. Since the formula doesn’t completely dry down, you don’t have to worry about the Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors sucking all of the moisture out of your lips. Or rushing to clean up mistakes before it dries down and becomes practically impossible to correct without messing up your foundation. I actually like the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Colors because they’re so easy on the lips and the color range is pretty nice.
Nude Flush is a soft neutral pinky nude that pairs nicely with my smokey looks without washing me out or competing for competition with my eyes. The color is a bit light for my brown skin though so I like to pair it with a deep brown liner (like Urban Decay Demolition 24/7 Eyeliner) or a vampy red like (ColourPop Ellarie Lippie Pencil). Nude Flush is a very versatile nude pink that pretty much all skin tones can wear as an everyday lip. Rebel Red, on the other hand, is a vibrant cherry red that definitely makes a statement. I pulled it out over the weekend for a glam red lip look and couldn’t believe how beautiful it looked against my brown skin. Rebel Red adds a fierce pop of color and flatters all skin tones effortlessly. When it comes to both shades, the Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color formula worked very well as they didn’t settle into my lip lines or emphasize any dry flakes like a regular matte liquid lipstick would. I just wish Nude Flush and Rebel Red lasted a little longer. They seem to hang around for about 4-6 hours before fading away into a solid stain. I’m happy that they stain well so they don’t completely leave you hanging but I would have loved to get that all day wear I get from other matte liquid lipsticks.
Overall, I dig the Maybellilne Vivid Liquid Lip Colors. I love how easy they apply, the intense pigmentation and how comfortable they feel on my dry lips. If you’re tired of super drying matte liquid lipsticks then you’ll probably enjoy the Maybelline Vivid Liquid Lip Colors too. However, if you go into trying them expecting the formula to be like most matte liquid lipsticks then you’ll be sorely disappointed.
