Tarte x MakeupShayla Tarteist Contour Palette Review

Everyone has a favorite YouTuber or two and one of mine is MakeupShayla. I don’t always have the time to watch her YouTube tutorials but I often live on her Snapchat when I’m on the go. Whether she’s getting ready for an event, showing us footage for an upcoming tutorial or just hanging on the scene with her friends I hear Beyonce’s Formation play in my head. Baby she slays! MakeupShayla slays everything that she does from her amazing style to her insanely gorgeous makeup looks and I’m obviously not the only one that noticed. Tarte (along with her thousands of subscribers and followers) also picked up on MakeupShayla’s unique brand of black girl magic and decided to collaborate with her to create a deeper version of Tarte’s original Tarteist Contour Palette. And, honey, it slays just as hard as MakeupShayla does!

I still give Tarte a little side eye because it took them a long time to follow up with a Tarteist Contour Palette for those of us with a little more melanin but I’m a huge fan of MakeupShayla so I had to support her. I still think Tarte could do a hell of a lot better when it comes to being more inclusive of deeper skin tones but the new Tarteist Contour Palette is definitely a step in the right direction. It comes with everything you need to slay your highlight and contour like MakeupShayla does oh so effortlessly. The Tarte x Makeup Shayla Tarteist Contour Palette includes:

  • Highlight a shimmering champagne highlighter to brighten and illuminate
  • Correct a pale neutral yellow to neutralize discoloration and set concealer
  • Soft Contour a matte neutral brown to add definition (light to medium skin tones)
  • Deep Contour a matte deep brown to add definition (medium to deep skin tones)
  • Accentuate a matte pinky peach blush for a natural flush of color
  • Glow a shimmering soft bronze highlighter to brighten and illuminate

When I first received it, I gave you guys a quick rundown and my first impressions but I’ve been using the MakeupShayla inspired Tarteist Contour Palette religiously ever since and I just have to tell you all about it. For starters, it smells like chocolate like the Tartelette in Bloom Palette so I get a whiff of happiness every time I open it. But that’s not the best part though. The best part is that the shades are perfect for brown skin beauties and dark skin divas. MakeupShayla really did her thang with the Tarteist Contour Palette!

I told you before that I loved the highlighters and contour shades but after using each shade (even that pale Correct powder) I’ve grown to love the Tarteist Contour Palette as a whole. Believe it or not, all of the shades work together beautifully to create a stunning highlight and pronounced contour like MakeupShayla does on the regular. Everything works incredibly well on my skin tone and looks great on my dry skin.

I still prefer a cream contour because it’s more precise and works best for my dry skin but the Tarteist Contour Palette has still managed to become my best friend because it’s so easy to use and blend. The Highlight, Soft Contour and Deep Contour powders are very pigmented so they show up perfectly on my brown skin with the slightest touch of my brush. The Correct, Glow and Accentuate powders are more sheer but still get the job done to complement the Highlight and Contour powders. All 6 powders have a soft, buttery smooth consistency that’s slightly powder but they never look dry or chalky when applied. Even that scary pale yellow Correct shade. Out of curiosity, I decided to give it a try and it’s so sheer that it almost acts as a transparent setting powder that’s great for setting concealer and lightly amplifying my highlight. Turns out, the Correct shade isn’t too shabby! It’s a teeny bit dry so I only use a little or else my dry under eyes will start to look cakey. Otherwise, I’ve grown to like it a lot and use it every time I whip out my Tarteist Contour Palette.

As you know, I’m completely obsessed with the rest of the powders though! Both Contour shades are deep enough for me to use with the Soft Contour working great as more of a natural contour and the Deep Contour coming in handy when I want cheekbones sharp enough to kill. Most times though, I layer them together for a more sculpted look that’s still natural yet defined. The Highlighter and Glow powder are also bomb.com as they add the most beautiful glow without emphasizing the texture of my skin or looking too stark. The Glow shade is more a soft, everyday highlighter that adds a subtle bronze gold glow while the Highlight gives a more pronounced champagne gold glow that’ll have your highlight shining all over social media like MakeupShayla. Like the Contour shades, I like to layer Glow and Highlight together to create a warm golden glow that dances in the light just the way I like it. The Accentuate blush is also a favorite of mine because it looks incredibly natural and layers well so I can easily add a nice flush of color without looking overdone or clownish.

I have to give it to Tarte and MakeupShayla. The new Tarteist Contour Palette is a complete win! The shade range meshes well for WOC (not just my brown beauties) and the quality of each powder is very impressive. They’re all buttery smooth and blend well on my dry skin so it’s easily a great option for all skin types. All of the powders seem to hold up very well throughout the day too with the Highlight, Glow and Blush holding on for around 7 hours with slight fading and the Contour shades staying strong for around 8-9 hours. The MakeupShayla inspired Tarteist Contour Palette should have happened a long time ago but I’m pleased that it’s finally here with amazing quality to boot. If you haven’t gotten your hands on the Tarte x MakeupShayla Tarteist Contour Palette yet I highly recommend heading to your local Sephora or popping it into your cart at Ulta before it’s all gone.
