No Christmas is complete without a sprinkle of #BlackGirlMagic! The Maybelline x Shayla City Mini Eyeshadow Palette proved to be the perfect stocking stuffer for me. I was so happy to get my hands on it! The Maybelline x Shayla City Mini Eyeshadow Palette released earlier this year but repeatedly sold out. Then it was hard to find in stores upon launch too. Ahh, the fun of drugstore releases!
I finally got my hands on it, though! And I couldn’t be more excited! Not only is MakeupShayla one of my favorite YouTubers but she’s also a shining example of Black Girl Magic. This is the first beauty blogger collaboration ever for Maybelline and it’s with this beautiful black queen. You go, Shayla!
Shayla’s Classic Spin
Maybelline released the new City Mini Eyeshadow Palettes earlier this year. And it’s made quite a splash. Many beauty bloggers and YouTubers were raving all over the place about these palettes. I was interested, of course. But still hesitant to try a drugstore eyeshadow palette.
I had to give the Maybelline City Mini Eyeshadow Palettes a shot when they let my girl Shayla put her special spin on it. I love that she created a palette that was simple yet still glam. And surprisingly inclusive. Light and deep skin divas can get on board with this palette. Huge plus! I also have to give Shalya her kudos for including a matte transition shade for chocolate cuties. A good transition shade is surprisingly hard to find in palette for women with dark skin. So it’s very impressive that we now have one in a palette that’s under $10.
Breaking Down the Shayla City Mini Eyeshadow Palette
The Maybelline x Shayla City Mini Eyeshadow Palette features 6 eyeshadows including:
- a satin cream-pearl
- a metallic golden bronze
- a satin brown with red undertone
- a metallic yellow gold
- a shimmering plum
- an intense matte black
All laid perfectly in a mosaic-inspired layout that’s both pretty and strategic. Maybelline designed the City Mini Eyeshadow Palettes to be broken down into sections. Making it easy for beginners to learn how to navigate the palette.
The 3 shades on the left are to be used as a base (the cream) all over the eye with the bottom 2 shades going into the crease. The 2 shimmery shades on the right are intended to go on the lid with the matte black reserved as eyeliner. I’m not a fan of putting metallic shadows in my crease so I’ll be using that delicious warm brown in my crease to create looks while using the matte black to help deepen and add a little smokiness. Or even the shimmery plum as it’s not too glittery and blends out to a nice satin finish.
Texture & Quality
Maybelline and Shayla really did the damn thing with this City Mini Palette! The Shayla City Mini Palette is perhaps one of the best drugstore palettes I’ve ever tried. The quality is very impressive! All of the shadows are so finely milled and smooth that they almost feel like creams. They’re all rather pigmented too. Minus the matte black. That one comes off a bit sheer and patchy. However, the rest of the palette is like butter, baby!
I couldn’t believe how easy the Shayla City Mini Palette applied and blended. I had to double check and make sure I was using the right palette. Maybelline seriously delivered with the Shayla City Mini Palette!
If you see it, get it!
The Maybelline x Shayla City Mini Palette was a hot commodity when it first released. So it was incredibly hard to find. The hype has died down considerably now, though. Making the Shayla City Mini Palette much more accessible and easier to find. You can find it online and in stores at Target, Ulta, Walmart and more fr about $8. Which is a steal considering the quality is amazing and you’re supporting a talented black woman. Win, win!
