There’s been a lot of exciting things happening in the beauty community these days but the most epic has to be Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty event. It’s rare to catch a discount on Prestige brands of makeup and skincare from any retailer. But I think it’s especially hard to do at Ulta because 99% of their coupons exclude the higher end brands. However, Ulta makes it up to us twice a year by giving us some pretty steep discounts on certain brands and products during 21 Days of Beauty.
Usually when a new makeup product receives a ton of rave reviews on social media I’m skeptical. I’m either wondering:
“Is it really that great?”
“Who’s paying you to sing these praises, girl? I need the receipts.”
That’s exactly how I was feeling when the new Tarte Double Duty Shape Tape Contour Concealer hit Ulta and literally everyone was deeming it the best concealer in the world. Concealers always crease on me almost immediately so I’ve kinda lost faith in concealers. Well, I did. If you follow me on Snapchat or Twitter, then you’ve probably seen me singing the praises of Tarte’s new Shape Tape Contour Concealer too because it really is the best concealer ever. Really.
Highlighting and contouring is well past being a trend now. It’s pretty much a way of life for many makeup junkies. Myself included. Mastering the technique isn’t easy but once you’ve got it down to a science it’s hard not to highlight and contour for the makeup gods every time you do a full face. Is it a lot of work (and blending)? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes! There’s nothing like a chiseled, define beat with cheekbones sharp enough to kill and a hot highlight that balances everything out. That’s why I’ve been addicted to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Cream Kit. I’ve been playing around with it for a couple of weeks now and I honestly can’t believe that I went so long without having it in my collection. The Contour Cream Kit makes highlighting and contouring so easy!
Finding the perfect concealer can be a real pain in the butt. First you have to find the perfect shade. A shade that isn’t too light and makes you look like Donald Trump in pictures or too close to your foundation that your complexion looks monotone with no dimension. Next, you have to find a good formula with the perfect balance of creaminess and emollience so it doesn’t look dry but doesn’t settle into every crack and crevice under your eyes before sliding right off by the end of the day. Trust me when I say I understand the struggle, girl! I’ve tried a ton of concealers over the years and I’ve always struggled with them settling into that one annoying fine line under my eyes and then looking dry and cakey when set with a powder. However, I think I may have found my holy grail concealer that actually gives my beloved NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer a little run for its money.
Liquid lipsticks became a huge trend last year and they’re still going pretty strong but it looks like there’s a new trend on the horizon and everyone is going nuts about it. The next big thing is color correcting which is an age old technique in the makeup artist community and now it’s making big waves in the consumer market. Everyone has jumped on the color correcting bandwagon including Yves Saint Laurent with their new Touche Éclat Neutralizer Color Correctors. There’s 3 shades including:
- Violet corrects yellow dull skin for a healthy glow
- Bisque corrects dark circles, dark spots and illuminates
- Green corrects blemishes and conceals redness for an even skin tone
With all these contour kits and palettes on the market, it’s easy to forget that we truly only need 1 product to contour. That’s it. Sometimes I’m tempted to give in and try one of those new fangled palettes but I often end up talking myself out of it because I’ve got my good ol’ trusty Black Radiance Concealer Stick. This baby is a contouring dream for brown skin!
