Smashbox X-Rated Mascara Review

Smashbox X-Rated Mascara

The eyes are the window to the soul so I love to dress mine up with flirty falsies and lots of mascara. It’s the Fancie way! My signature look includes a killer winged eyeliner, long lashes and a coat (or two) of mascara on my bottom lashes to make my eyes stand out and give them that girly doll eyed look. One of the latest mascaras to hit my stash is the new Smashbox X-Rated Mascara and although it doesn’t quite live up to its name I’m still feeling it. A lot.

Smashbox X-Rated Mascara

With a name like X-Rated, I was expecting crazy length and volume but the formula actually has a softer more natural approach that I can’t help but love. The Smashbox X-Rated Mascara comes in a rather funky matte black tube with a twisted X shape and small spiky wand that manages to grab and accentuate every one of my tiny bushy lashes.

Although the formula doesn’t make my lashes look all hot and heavy as the name implies it still manages to add a bit of length and curl while separating my clumpy unruly lashes. Which is huge considering how much I love falsies. I usually don’t apply mascara to my top lashes when I wear falsies but I love swiping on a coat of X-Rated to help give my natural lashes a little boost and helps them blend into my falsies much better. I also adore how it brings out my bottom lashes making them look longer and thicker yet still rather natural even after 2-3 coats.

The only major problem I have with X-Rated is that the stopper doesn’t work properly. The X-Rated formula is rather wet (like a YSL mascara) so things can easily get a little messy if I don’t wipe off the excess before application which takes a little more effort than I’d like some mornings. However, the effort turns out to be worth it because X-Rated doesn’t clump easily or make my lashes look too unnatural (think spider legs) even if I decide to layer on coat after coat.

The X-Rated name is definitely a misleading but I can’t knock Smashbox because the formula is actually quite nice. Even though X-Rated isn’t a waterproof formula it still holds up well on my watery eyes. It lasts me over 8 hours without smudging, flaking or smearing all over my hooded lids throughout the day. If you’re looking for a more natural mascara that’ll accentuate your lashes with a little length and curl then I think you’ll enjoy the Smashbox X-Rated Mascara too. However, if you’re expecting lots of length and volume then you can safely pass on this one.
