Hustle & Brunch Detroit Round Up

Being surrounded by successful women is a beautiful thing! Black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs despite our all obstacles. I’m currently transitioning Fancieland into a lifestyle brand so I leapt at the opportunity to learn from the most successful women in Detroit. Hustle and Brunch Detroit certainly did not disappoint!

The panelist consisted of 3 entrepreneurs including:

  • Ayanna Alcendor attorney
  • Ebony Swank fashion boutique owner
  • Bria Larine model and social media influencer

I learned a great deal from all of the ladies. We may come from different walks of life but our struggles are all the same. Each woman told a story of previously not being taken seriously. Or paid her worth. Or struggling to be heard. We’ve all been there.

It’s easy to mistake these minor setbacks as total failure. That isn’t always the case, girl boss! These women used their setbacks as fuel for a major come up that you can’t deny. We could all learn from that!

People will tell you no. Business will get slow. Mistakes will happen. Learn from these moments and use it to your advantage!

My Biggest Takeaways

Use Your Disadvantages to Your Advantage

Everyone isn’t going to take you seriously as a woman. And that’s okay! Let people underestimate you. You’re smart, powerful and resourceful. You know this. They don’t. Let your work speak for itself! People will assume you’re not smart. Or you’re not strong. Or that you simply can’t do it. That’s your chance to under-promise and over deliver!

You can argue with someone until you’re blue in the face. But you know the age old saying.

Actions speak louder than words.

People won’t believe you’re a girl boss simply because you say so. And that’s okay! There’s ways you can use that to your advantage. I used to get offended by people assuming I was stupid. Until I learned what I gain from it. Even the smartest person in the room can learn something from someone else. You’d be surprised what people are willing to teach you for free when they initially assumed you were too dumb!

Don’t Get Complacent

If you don’t work, you don’t eat! There’s no such thing as slacking off once you become a girl boss. You have to work hard. Twice as hard as you would working for someone else. You can’t get comfortable! Not even when you feel you’ve reached success.

Ebony Swank credits her success to never getting comfortable. She knows successful but she strives to be better and expand her brand. She never stops working. Ebony says the key to Swank A Posh success is always searching for the next new thing and ways to improve. You can apply this logic to anything you do. Always strive for bigger and better. And put in the work. No one’s ever got rich from their comfort zone!

Don’t Give Up!

Social media can really skew the view of things. Some people share absolutely everything. However, the average person only posts the highlights of their life. Meaning you’re more likely to know about your favorite social media personality’s latest business venture than the last time their lights were cut off. Everyone struggled! All of the ladies mentioned times where business was just slow. But they didn’t give up! And you can’t either! We’re living in a world that’s constantly changing and evolving. You have to be focused, determined and have thick skin. And you have to be innovative!
